After the meeting was over, Katie excused herself to the restroom. As she exited the stall, one of the women from the conference was waiting for her. She stood in such a way that it blocked Katie's exit. "Excuse me," Katie said as she tried to step around her. The woman stepped in front of Katie again, stopping her.
"You need to listen to me," the woman began, "I don't know how you managed to weasel your way into Damien's bed, but there is no place for you here," the woman scoffed. "Do you really think that he will always accept you? That he will continue to let you embarrass him the way you did today?" she laughed. "I assure you, he will open his eyes, and when he does, you will be gone. The minute you are, one of us will take your place."
Now Katie was furious. She held her chin high and said, "First of all, I didn't weasel my way anywhere. Second, my husband's bed is no concern of yours, and lastly, who the hell do you think you are anyway?"
At this, the woman stepped forward and pushed her finger into Katie's chest. "Let me tell you who I am. I am your biggest threat. I have known Damien since we were 12, and I know every detail of his businesses, all of them. I am his personal assistant," the woman laughed. "Who do you think it is he calls every night? Who do you think he turns to when he needs help making a business decision? It isn't you, is it?" She looked at Katie disdainfully. "You are nothing. You are a nobody, and you will always be a nobody."
It sickened Katie to hear the way she said "personal" assistant. Katie knew full well what she was implying. Katie steadied herself, held her head high, and shoved past her. At the door, she turned and said, "You need to remember who I am. I am Mrs. Damien Alexander. You never will be." Katie hoped that she appeared much stronger than she felt. She blinked quickly, trying to hold back tears that were threatening to escape. She had not noticed Lucas sitting at a table not far away watching her.
Once back at the table, Damien still stood and talked with a few men who had not left yet. Katie waited patiently for him to finish. He seemed utterly unaware of the fact that she was upset. This was not like him. He was usually aware of everything. Perhaps he just had a lot on his mind and was distracted.
As they started to get in the car, the woman from the bathroom yelled for Damien. "Excuse me, Katie, I will be right back. This won't take but a minute."
Katie's nerves started to unravel again. Charlie noticed immediately. "Ma'am, are you alright? Did something happen?" he asked.
"I will be fine, Charlie," Katie replied. She didn't even try to smile this time.
"Ma'am, if something has happened, if someone has upset you, you need to let Mr. Alexander know," Charlie tried to convince her. "He will take care of it for you."
Katie scoffed. He had not even noticed she was upset, but he sure was friendly with the woman now. "Maybe she is right, Charlie," Katie said and turned to look out the other window. She didn't want to see them talking. Katie was aware that Charlie already knew who the someone was that had said something.
"Ma'am, I am always here if you need me," Charlie said softly.
"Thank you," Katie replied just as softly as she wiped a tear from her cheek. Charlie stepped out of the limo and walked over to where Damien stood chatting with the woman. "Ma'am, excuse me," he addressed the woman. Then he turned to Damien, "Sir if we don't leave now, we will be late for the appointment."
Damien quickly glanced at his watch, then replied, "Mary, I must go. We will talk later."
Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think.
Much Love to you all.
